Metabolic Syndrome in Osteoporotic Postmenopausal Women Attending a Family Practice Clinic in Jordan.

- Abstract
Objective: This study aims to investigate the frequency of metabolic syndrome among postmenopausal osteoporotic women and to examine the association of metabolic syndrome and each of its components with BMD. Design: This is a cross sectional study of 326 postmenopausal women attending a family practice clinic. Materials and method: The frequency of metabolic syndrome was investigated. In addition, the association between metabolic syndrome and its components with BMD was studied. Results: The frequency of metabolic syndrome was 29.4% according to the WHO criteria and 42.9% according to the ATP III criteria. Occupation and education showed a significant difference in the frequency of metabolic syndrome (p values were 0.003 and 0.032 respectively). Increased number of metabolic syndrome components according to the ATP III criteria was associated with an increased T-score at the lumbar spine (p = 0.011). According to the WHO criteria, the mean bone mineral density (measured as T-score) was significantly higher among patient with metabolic syndrome (-2.73 ± -0.68) than patients without metabolic syndrome (-2.89 ± -0.62), p = 0.043. The significant factor that was associated with the bone mineral density at the lumbar spine was found to be body mass index, (R2 = 0.021, p = 0.001). Conclusion: The frequency of metabolic syndrome in the study was relatively high, which highlights the need to pay attention for the treatment of its individual components. Metabolic syndrome was associated with a higher bone mineral density. In addition, the mechanism of the relation between metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density was found to be through body mass index.
