- Title
Part III: Geology and the Emigrant.
- Authors
Martin, Jr., Charles W.
- Abstract
The article explores how overland trail migrants wrote about the geological features they encountered and discusses the level of understanding they had for various geological processes. It draws on journal accounts that describe encounters with rivers and notes that a minority of travelers understood their erosive properties. The article also examines how other geological features and processes were written about including mountain building, the erosion of cliffs and bluffs due to rain and wind at locations such as Castle Rock and Chimney Rock as well as the unique features of Devil's Gate canyon.
