- Authors
Cox, Christopher
- Abstract
The article discusses linguistic innovation and preservation among Bolivian Old Colony Mennonites in Latin America. It focuses upon the consequences of contact between linguistic variations within a multilingual community and the potential relevance of the Old Colony linguistic environment to a broader view of changes in language and language maintenance and variation. According to the author, Latin American Old Colony Mennonite multilingualism traced its roots to Mennonite migration to Poland in the 16th and 17th centuries. The article discusses the maintenance of Plautdietsch and Huagadietsch linguistic varieties, internal and external linguistic developments, and the influence of Spanish and English.
