The article focuses on personal and professional life of three African American Canadian professional painters including Robert Scott Duncanson, Edward Mitchell Bannister and James MacDonald Bamsley. Topics discussed include role of Duncanson's work in the field of African American art in destroying myths about African American intellectual inferiority, working of Bannister with socialite hairstylist Christina Carteaux, and Bamsley's painting "The Entrance to Dieppe Harbour."
