- Abstract
The article discusses immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a common bleeding disorder in children caused by platelet destruction and impaired production. It can be a primary disorder or secondary to other conditions. The pathogenesis of ITP is not fully understood but is believed to involve autoreactive antibodies and immune dysregulation. Childhood ITP is usually benign and has a high rate of spontaneous remission, while adult ITP is more chronic. Predictors of chronic ITP include age, platelet count, and absolute lymphocyte count. A recent study in India identified higher absolute lymphocyte count at diagnosis as a predictor of response to treatment. The study also found that less aggressive disease may not require treatment and can go into spontaneous remission. Further research is needed to better understand and manage this condition.
