- Abstract
There is a lack of quality systems in the care of patients with pain, treated in specialized pain units in Sweden. The aim of this study was to map out the organization, work procedure and quality development in specialized pain care in Sweden. Of 87 available pain units, 53 answered a questionnaire. The respondents showed a great interest in developing a quality register for pain and pain treatment in Sweden. Despite differences in size and organization there are similarities regarding professions, specialists. treatment methods, aims and quality indicators and instruments for assessing health, pain and quality of life. The pain units used 42 different instruments. Although most units had worked with the instruments for a long time they were not used frequently. We suggest an evaluation of the instruments used. Thereafter a plan to find out aims, indicators, instruments, organizations and work procedures for an easy system to measure and guarantee quality in the daily work within specialized pain care.
