Talking About Talk: Reclaiming the Value and Power of Literature Circles.
- Authors
Mills, Heidi; Jennings, Louise
- Abstract
The authors, founders of the Center For Inquiry (CFI), a partnership between the University of South Carolina and Richland, South Carolina School District Two, discuss the findings of a five-year study on the nature of inquiry-based learning as it relates to literature discussion groups. The authors focus on the concepts of reflection and reflexivity and demonstrate how the use of these concepts helped two teachers and their students improve their literature discussion groups. According to the authors, significant student achievement and growth occurred as students reflexively examined their learning. The authors offer instructional strategies they find effective, such as having students record discussion sessions, having students create self-evaluations, and using student ideas.
