- Title
Orientation to a New Book: More Than a Picture Walk.
- Authors
Briggs, Connie; Forbes, Salli
- Abstract
The article focuses on teaching strategies to help elementary remedial readers gain understanding, insights, and engagement with the texts of the books they read. The authors developed a Book Orientation strategy in which the teacher and student begin together by analyzing a book's plot, vocabulary, and any unusual phrases. The article provides a sample orientation with possible approaches for the teacher to help engage the reader. The article also discusses how to adapt such a lesson to teaching books in a classroom situation as opposed to a one-on-one approach.
