- Title
"When you get married, you'll know more about these things:" Shirley Jackson's Sustained Critique of Husbands and Marriage.
- Authors
Wilson, Michael T.
- Abstract
The article examines author Shirley Jackson's sustained critique of husbands and marriage as indicated in her novels. It points out that the critique of marriage that emerges from her novels follows the contours of her own marriage and life experiences. Novels tackled include "The Road Through the Wall," "Hangsaman" and "The Bird's Nest." It points out that her final published novel "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" offers a resolution to the paradox of the happy housewife.
