The Etymology of Rivet.
- Authors
Sayers, William
- Abstract
The author discusses the etymology of the word rivet, using it as an example of lexicographical research methodology. The definition of the word from the "Oxford English Dictionary," both in the second print edition and online in 2011, is discussed, as well as the Norman French and post-Classical Latin origins of the word. The French verb rivez in the works of 12th century historian Benoît de Sainte Maure is mentioned, as well as the literary form chanson de geste, the French dictionary "Le Trésor de la langue française," and the play "Henry V" by William Shakespeare.
