- Abstract
Background: Poor health literacy affects healthcare delivery and outcomes. Activity: The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the use and feasibility of the Newest Vital Sign Health Literacy (NVS HL) assessment tool in a primary care clinic. Implementation: This study utilized a mixedmethod approach, creating a bi-level data collection model assessing data from two sources: patients (n=30) and clinic nursing staff (n=7). The NVS HL assessment tool consisted of six questions and took less than five minutes to complete. Results: Over half (56.7%) of patients' NVS scores indicated an adequate level of health literacy, 20% indicated a possibility of limited health literacy, and 23.3% indicated a high likelihood of limited health literacy. Study results indicated 71% of clinic nursing staff considered the NVS a reliable and feasible instrument for use in the clinic setting; 85.7% considered using the results from the NVS to modify treatment plans.
