- Abstract
No other topic has kept the scientific community as busy as Covid-19 in the last year. In this essay, we look at three key roles that science played during the pandemic : basic research, policy advice and science communication. We build on insights from two research projects on »Solidarity in Times of a Pandemic« in Europe (SolPan) and in Latin America (SolPan+). These two projects use qualitative methods to explore the experiences of people, their reactions to political measures, social risks, and coping strategies. The results of the projects, and also the circumstances, in which they were carried out, reflect global inequalities and highlight the relevance of context-sensitive research questions and objectives. In this contribution we take stock of what science has already achieved during the pandemic and highlight current challenges that need to be further addressed. We end with a call for solidarity-based science
