- Abstract
This article examines the changes in production models within the Japanese animation industry during the early 1960s, with a focus on the creation of the animation director role at Tōei Dōga studio. The studio aimed to produce animated feature films at a high rate while maintaining financial sustainability. By analyzing production documents and conducting interviews with studio employees, the author explores the division of labor and power dynamics within the studio. The article also discusses the impact of the animation director position on the production structure and the challenges faced in balancing artistic freedom with management control. Overall, the article provides insights into the evolution of production models and animation direction in the Japanese animation industry during this period.
