- Title
AWWA Water Science Author Spotlight: Florence Choo.
- Abstract
Florence Choo, a researcher at the South Australian Water Corporation, recently published an article in AWWA Water Science about cyanobacteria and water treatment. Her research focuses on monitoring and managing the growth of blue-green algae to ensure that water treatment plants can respond effectively. Choo's study examined the history of blue-green algae along the River Murray in Australia and evaluated the effectiveness of different treatment plants in removing these organisms and their associated taste and odor compounds. The research was motivated by a call for articles on algal blooms, and Choo's team believed their findings would be relevant to an American audience. The study did not use new techniques but employed a range of methods to understand the issue. Choo encountered challenges in balancing her research with other work duties but found satisfaction in contributing to the everyday operations of water treatment plants. The research prompted further exploration into the shifting species of cyanobacteria and their management. In her free time, Choo enjoys cooking, hiking, and silversmithing. The most exciting aspect of her work is tackling problems that do not have known solutions and knowing that her efforts benefit the utility and its customers.
