- Abstract
Total organic matter production for the growing season 1957 was ascertained by the harvest method for several natural and managed communities in central Minnesota. Above ground plant parts were sampled by clip quadrats and underground parts by a steel tube which cleanly removed a soil core with enclosed roots. Collected materials were oven-dried at 105°C and results presented on an area basis. Yearly increments for those species in which it was possible to determine both shoot and root values ranged from 6,300 kg/Ha (Zizania aquatica) to 13,900 kg/Ha (Zea mays, fertilized). Increments for above ground production only varied from 1,200 kg/Ha (Setaria glauca) to 16,800 kg/Ha (Typha hybrid). Efficiencies of yearly organic matter production in relation to total solar energy receipt were estimated at from 0.04+ to 0.53+ percent. Some early successional plots in an old field were found to have efficiencies roughly comparable to the Lindeman value for a bog lake in the same vicinity. Shoot-root ratios for annual plants varied from 11.6 (Zizania aquatica) to 0.37 (Secale cereale). Weight redistribution from shoots to roots or rhizomes and fruit was noted for Zea mays and Typha (hybrid) from an earlier to later part of the season. Comparisons were made of productivity with similar communities in other areas.
