- Abstract
This article focuses on the preliminary statement prepared by a committee on the Elementary School Counselor appointed jointly by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and the American School Counselor Association. The purpose of this statement is to identify and provide guidelines for the development of the role of the elementary school counselor as perceived by the membership of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and the American School Counselor Association. Guidance for all, children is accepted as an integral component of the total educational experience in the elementary school. Guidance is defined as a continuing process concerned with determining and providing for the developmental needs of all pupils. School Counselor in an elementary school is a term used in this policy statement to designate a counselor working as a member of the professional staff of an elementary school; responsible to the principal of that school; concerned with and accepting a responsibility for working with pupils, teachers, and parents; and having as his major concern the developmental needs of all pupils. The counselor is educationally oriented, highly knowledgeable in the area of child growth and development with a broadly based, multidisciplinary background in the behavioral sciences and a high degree of competence in human relations.
