- Title
BYU and Religious Universities in a Secular Academic World.
- Authors
Wilkins, Alan L.; Whet, David A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Brigham Young University (BYU), with a particular focus on its identity as a religious research university and its relationship to other academic institutions. According to the authors, BYU's commitment to combining elements which are sometimes in tension, such as faith and reason or teaching and research, has allowed it to remain a religious institution while other universities have experienced secularization. Details on BYU's practices of hiring members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) as faculty and investing in their socialization are presented. Other topics include the financial support BYU receives from the Church and the role of the board of trustees in BYU's policies.
