- Abstract
This article focuses on the relation between patronage which is one of the most basic elements of the Ottoman poetry and Divan poet, and its generation process. In other words, by examining the sphere of influence of the patronage system on Ottoman poetry's generation process, it is aimed to lay stress on that process pointed out. Within this framework, the article first treats of how Ottoman royal house became a center of literature, in general terms, then points out how the goal of Ottoman Divan poetry to transcend Iran poetry lays a burden on Ottoman Divan poet. The poetic themes of Ottoman poetry and the identities reflected by poet during his composing experiences are also put forward as the elements which directly influence his generating process. In the context of highlighting ode (kaside) as the most significant literary genre, the character of the relationship between poet and sultan and the parallelity between the centrality of the figure of sultan and criteria which Divan poet are obliged to carry out also take place in this article. For instance, for a poet to be appointed as the companion (musâhip) of sultan or for a poem to be appreciated, Ottoman court and their tendencies are as determinative as the sultan himself. The two elements, (1) criteria for literary works and (2) the Ottoman court that appraise those generated works leave space for the encircled poet's generation process in what range and to emphasize the generation process of poetry in this sense constitutes the basis of this article.
