- Abstract
This essay discusses reading as a mode of democratic participation. Topics discussed are reading as a mediating activity that links democratic ways of speaking, writing and thinking, influence of popular sovereignty on the development of the function of reading in the modern democratic culture, communication as the core of democratic culture, significance of art to unleashing communicative capacity in and through language, and role of reading in mending problems of communication and democracy.
