- Abstract
Introduction: The productive performance of tilapia is dependent on the temperature of the water, so that its growth and survival are negatively affected in water temperatures below 24 °C or above 32 °C. Aim: To compare the growth rate, food consumption and survival of red tilapia from four farms from Antioquia (Colombia) in two conditions: 1. Suboptimal temperature and 2. Smallholder farms. Methods: Two studies were carried out, in the first one the productive performance of commercial alevines at a constant temperature of 22.65 °C for 26 days was compared and in the second, the productive parameters of four farms of tilapia were monitored in six farms of small producers over 165 days. Results:Under constant suboptimal conditions or temperature variables in the field, some types of red tilapia from different farms have differences in their survival and specific growth rate. Conclusions: the productive behavior of the tilapia seed produced in the department of Antioquia is heterogeneous among farms of small producers, so it is necessary to evaluate in detail which origin of tilapia obtains the best results in the particular conditions of each producer.
