- Abstract
This article features the work of French painter Edgar Degas. It identifies the early works of Degas as historical paintings in the classical tradition. It recalls the adoption of different methods of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Eugène Delacroix and Gustave Courbet by Degas. It also notes the interest of Degas in painting people. In addition, the article observes that women characters of paintings by Degas were often at a disadvantage. The representation of poverty, social stigma and illnesses in the paintings is noted.
