- Title
Measuring the Savings From Managed Care: Experience at Citibank.
- Authors
Reiff, Michael G.; Sperling, Kenneth L.
- Abstract
In a leap of faith, Citibank NA in 1989 designed a point-of-service plan aimed at containing health care costs on long term without sacrificing quality of care. In 1994, a study was undertaken to empirically evaluate whether these goals had been achieved. The study supported the bank's overall managed care industry, providing objective, quantifiable data that can lead to a greater efficiencies. Every employee has its own particular strategy for managing health care costs. The authors' claim that Citibank's specific mix of delivery options, design, pricing and vendors is their own and may not be appropriate for any other employee. Their study reinforced the belief that benefits strategies and decisions can be driven by facts and the results can be accurately measured. In today's complex health care environment, these are minimum requirements for success.
