- Abstract
There has been considerable interest in the development and production of biodegradable polymer to solve the current problem of pollution caused by the continuous use of synthetic polymer of petroleum origin. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are one such polymer which is known to accumulate as intracellular inclusion in some bacteria. The material properties exhibited by PHAs make it a close substitute for the synthetic plastic. Under this study, comparison of two different soil samples was done to see the production of PHA by the inhabiting bacteria. Ten bacteria were isolated from sugarcane rhizosphere sample collected from sugarcane fields situated at Pacheda, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and five bacteria were isolated from wheat rhizosphere sample collected from wheat crop fields situated at Khairagarh (Chhattisgarh). All the isolates were grown in the media which had an excess carbon concentration. Six and five bacteria from sugarcane rhizosphere sample and wheat rhizosphere sample respectively produce PHA. Micrococcus mucilaginosus and Streptococcus raffinolactis from sugarcane sample and Enterobacter aerogenes from wheat sample produce high amount of PHA. Since this is a biodegradable polymer therefore it would be helpful in making our environment green and healthier for all living creatures on earth.
