- Abstract
This is the result of a dissertation research developed with the objective of analysing the librarian practice in the prison environment, considering the challenges and possibilities for improvement in this place. The methodological course adopted results in a study guided by a qualitative approach, of an exploratory nature and with a descriptive objective. As an instrument for data collection, a questionnaire was used and to analyse the data, content analysis was based on the establishment of categories. The results showed that the lack of a prison librarian position is perceived as one of the biggest obstacles to librarian practice in prison. In addition, the subjects participating in the research highlighted difficulties regarding the financial aspect and lack of discussion within the scope of training. As shown by the results of this investigation, the first aspect that could favour the work of the librarian in the prison system would be the legitimization of the profession, with the inclusion of the position in the staff of the Penitentiary Department. It is concluded that, even in the face of difficulties, some librarians accept the challenge of assuring people in deprivation of liberty the right to books and reading, assuming a role that should belong to the public authorities. In addition, it is understood that a joining of forces is necessary, ranging from public authorities, class institutions, training schools and civil society so that the librarian's work can be carried out effectively in prison libraries, contributing to promote the appropriation of information and reading, the development of critical thinking and the autonomy of the person deprived of liberty.
