Die Universität und ihr Name - Martin Luther.
- Authors
STENGEL, FRIEDEMANN
- Abstract
The article discusses the political background to the naming of the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, for Reformation theologian Martin Luther in 1933. The author highlights the significance in this context of a controversy surrounding the appointment and eventual ouster of Protestant theologian Günther Dehn as a professor of practical theology at the university in the early 1930s. Issues addressed include political and theological debates among German Protestant theologians, the role of religion and politics in the rise of National Socialism in Germany, and Dehn's controversial statements regarding World War I, pacifism, and nationalism from a liberal theological perspective.
