- Abstract
Purpose: Despite the benefits, hospital autopsy rates have been declining. This study investigated the knowledge of clinical residents regarding the autopsy service at our tertiary care institution and provides an example of a simple and achievable educational intervention. Study Design: Descriptive, Survey Methods: A self administered electronic needs assessment questionnaire was distributed to residents in various medical specialties. A targeted resident-led educational initiative was then developed based on the results of the questionnaire. Interactive sessions with pre and post-tests were conducted during clinical specialty academic half days between March and June 2013. Results: The needs assessment was completed by 77 residents from five different specialties. The vast majority of residents (97%) had received no training regarding the autopsy service, yet the majority (87%) had previously approached families to obtain autopsy consent. 83% of residents reported that they were not comfortable answering the family's questions and the majority lacked knowledge about the service, which was confirmed by the pre intervention test. The post-intervention test showed significant improvement in knowledge. Conclusions: Residents who are responsible for obtaining autopsy consent lack procedural-related knowledge and confidence when approaching relatives to obtain consent. A didactic educational intervention led by pathology residents increases clinical resident knowledge and improves collaboration and patient safety.
