Timing Patterns in New Zealand English Rhythm.
- Authors
Warren, Paul
- Abstract
The article focuses on the timing patterns of syllable rhythm in New Zealand English (NZE). It discusses the study of Helen Ainsworth and Janet Holmes and Helen Ainsworth, which examines the use of full vowels for reduced vowels in Maori English (ME) than in other NZEs including British English (BE) and Pakeha English (PE). It also explores the relative position of NZE from stress-timed to syllable-timed rhythms as well as the relationship between full vowel incidence and speech rate. It is found that BE and ME have the same rates of speech, however, foot duration in ME is more dependent on foot length. Moreover, ME is more syllable-based than BE, while, PE has less variability in syllable duration than BE.
