- Title
On Langdon's (1989) East Polynesian Plant Study.
- Authors
Marck, Jeff
- Abstract
The article reports on the proposition of Robert Langdon regarding the distribution of plant names in East Polynesia. The author avers that the assertion of Langdon is largely unmotivated. A few plant loans may suggest some trade proceeding immigration but they would never be represented by a competent linguist as counterevidence to dominating propositions regarding subgroups based upon shared innovations in morphology, lexicon and phonology. Shared innovations organize the basis of the orthodoxy about Polynesian internal relations and will not be challenged by the supposition of Langdon. The author infers that Langdon lacks the wide notion of demography and language community that penetrates efficient work on Polynesian and Oceanic linguistics in general.
