- Abstract
The article considers European exploration and colonial expansion in Asia during the early modern period focusing particularly on the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC), founded in 1602. It compares how the VOC administered its territories such as the Banda Islands and Taiwan. The VOC's relations with China and Japan are also considered.
