- Abstract
The description of the dysplastic melanocytic nevus (DMN) has provided not only a unique opportunity to potentially identify individuals at increased risk for the development of melanoma but also another model for the study of tumorigenesis in humans. The advantages of studying tumor progression of melanocytic proliferations of the skin have been outlined and in essence are related to easy accessibility on the skin surface for observation and removal. As in animal models and in other human tissues, the DMN in all likelihood represents an atypical proliferation with some potential for progression to melanoma.
