- Title
Sectarian spaces: The politics of place and gender in seventeenth-century prophetic Writing.
- Authors
Hinds, Hilary
- Abstract
This article argues that the recent critical scrutiny of the signifying capacity of the body in seventeenth-century studies needs to be accompanied by an examination of the locations in which that body is situated. The argument is developed through two case studies: one of the Quaker Dorothy Waugh's account of her imprisonment following her prophesying in Carlisle market place, and one of the Fifth Monarchist Anna Trapnel's account of her post-prophetic journey through London. In both instances, the location of the prophetic body is argued to be a signifying elementwithinthe prophecy, rather than just a settingforit.
