- Abstract
The aim of the article is to analyse the iconography, artistic and stylistic expression, and technical features of Christological woodcuts made by Steponas Kuneika, a woodcarver from the first half of the 19th century. Among other self-taught 19th-century woodcarvers, S. Kuneika stands out as an artist who learned his skills in the engraving workshop of the graphic artist Stanislovas Čerskis, and whose works, owing to his exceptional skills, are distinguished by a higher quality of execution than those of other folk artists. From a stylistic point of view, Kuneika's work is classicist in the context of 19th-century folk art. These characteristics make it worthwhile to place him in the category of learned carvers. Kuneika created multilayered iconographic carvings of Christological passion scenes, the motifs of which resemble the sufferings of the poor peasants or townspeople of the 19th century. The function of such woodcuts was magicalprotective, substitutive or rhetorical-didactic, and they were widely distributed from Samogitia to Vilnius.
