- Abstract
Present study was conducted in 2010 to document and know the scientific rationale of indigenous animal health practices followed by Tharu tribal farmers of Uttar Pradesh. A sample of 150 respondents was selected through Probability Proportionate Sampling (PPS) from 30 tribal villages of block Palia in district Lakhimpur Khiri. Data were collected from them using semi-structured interview schedule. Ten common animal health practices documented were as 1. Afara (indigestion) 2. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) 3. Galaghontu (Hemorrhagic septicaemia) 4. Thanaila (mastitis) 5. Snake bite 6. Ponkana (Rinderpest) 7. Loo lagna (sun stroke) 8. Jalna (fire burn) 9. Cough & cold 10. Doodh badana (increase milk yield) and treatment by digenous method was reported to be practiced by 86.00,89.33,91.33,75.33,92.00,77.33,94.0.0, 82.00, 95.33 and 79.33 percent Tharu farmers respectively.
