- Abstract
Ginning, delinting, cleaning, grading and storage are the major steps in Post Harvest Handling of cotton Seeds. Main purpose of seed processing comprise of achieving the highest physical purity, the highest germination and the highest coarse recovery. Sufficient work on cotton seed delinting, processing and storage has been done in the seed technology research component of the National Seeds Project. According to a rough estimate, the demand of cotton hybrids and the varieties in 2020 will be around 5,000 tonnes and 10,000 tonnes respectively. Research on processing and well maintained storage for such a large quantity can not be overemphasized. The mechanism of mechanical delinting, acid delinting and gas delinting alongwith their effect on the cottonseed quality in exhibited and interpreted in this research paper. The effects of the variables of this process or the quality of the end product is studied. Currently recommended screen sieve sizes for removal of undesirable brokens, diseased and insect affected seeds from the cotton seeds was found unsuitable Sizes and shapes of sieve apeture to achieve the highest physical purity and germination in different cotton varieties are recommended. The positive effect of specific gravity separation in the seed quality in cotton is described. Storage performance of processed cotton seeds is particularly described.
