- Abstract
In Portugal, the Republic was imposed by a revolution when, after more than seven centuries of monarchy, the head of state was elected. Despite the interest of studying the behaviour of the press in the presidential elections during the First Portuguese Republic (5 October 1910 to 28 May 1926), this is a subject not yet addressed in the history of Portuguese journalism. This research aims to contribute to a greater understanding of this subject. To this end, we analysed the coverage from Ilustração Portuguesa (1903-1924) combining an investigation with quantitative and qualitative approach, articulating the detection, collection and analysis of the data of the two previous and subsequent issues to the dates of each election. The study concluded that the presidential elections in the I Republic had a strong impact and a high value as news; they were events of great political, social and cultural symbolism, similar to the enthronements in the monarchies; taking into account the time and the independent character of the publication, the coverages were essentially descriptive, not analytical and interpretative; focused on "personal" with strong use of portrait photography; the speech presented the disenchantment with the I Republic, namely with the dissensions and struggles in the political field, often violent; and each presidential election was framed in a forward-looking and always praising speech for each of the new heads of state.
