- Abstract
Lantern at the Crossroads was a well-known novel written by Li Liiyuan in the middle of the Qing Dynasty. In this novel the writer portrays a vivid picture of people' s life in the Kaifeng area of his time. Among all the roles, Hui Yangmin is not the most important one, but he is a particular one because this character is molded as a representative of hypocrites. This essay intends to explore the causes of Hui's tragedy by analyzing the literary image in the setting of the time.
