- Abstract
R.T. (Phil) Nuytten, a pioneer in subsea exploration and the development of underwater equipment and techniques, passed away in 2023. Throughout his career, Nuytten logged numerous hours underwater as a commercial diver and contributed to the creation of new technology. He was involved in experimental deep diving and the development of mixed-gas decompression tables, setting international standards still in use today. Nuytten founded Can-Dive Services, Ltd. and co-founded Oceaneering International, Inc., both of which played significant roles in subsea development projects. He also made contributions to atmospheric diving system technology and designed the revolutionary ADS "Newtsuit" and "Exosuit ADS." Nuytten's work extended beyond subsea exploration, as he was an expert on West Coast Native Art and published a book on totem carvers. He received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to underwater development and commerce. Nuytten's legacy includes his commitment to the safety of diving technicians and his dedication to exploring, learning about, and protecting the world's oceans.
