- Abstract
Keratin was extracted from the wool yarn by the reduction method (R) and molten urea method (U), and the extracted keratin was examined through the infrared spectroscopy and electrophoresis. ln order to prepare the functional materials which containing wool protein, the re-dissolution performance of keratin was studied. The results showed that the molecular weight distribution of the keratin produced by the two methods were 17.0~54.0 kD and 14.4~25.0 kD, and the intact amide bond remained in the structure. The keratin can be well dissolved in the mass fraction of 88% formic acid and 0.08 mol/L sodium hydroxide solution, or in 0.12 mol/L Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 With the extraction time extended, the molecular weight and the difficulty of dissolution increased. The keratin can also be dissolved in 0.08 mol/L of sodium hydroxide mixed with DMSO or DMF, and 88% of formic acid mixed wilh DMSO or DMF, but the solubility decreased with the addition of DMSO or DMF.
