Catholic Theology and Catholic Higher Education in the United States.

- Abstract
This article argues that Catholic theology in the United States risks losing its lay, ecumenical character. The article describes the particular setting of theological higher education in the United States against the backdrop of American history and considers the Second Vatican Council a key pivot in this history. The Council set in motion a blossoming of theology in Catholic colleges and universities. Attempts at aggiornamento in Catholic theology, however, have brought unintended consequences for Catholic theology. As a result, there is a danger that Catholic theology will return to the pre-Vatican II, clerical model.
