- Abstract
The article discusses the Harkness teaching method employed at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. The author reflects on the origins of seminar-styled classroom environments and management inspired by philanthropist Edward Harkness. Students sit around an oval table and participate in classroom discussion under this method. The role of the teacher in this setting is explored and related to the appropriate level of discussion guidance and intervention. Other topics include classroom dynamics, discussion habits, the role of writing and technology, and student engagement and participation.
