- Title
Bells, Barrels and Bullion: Diving and Salvage in the Atlantic World, 1500 to 1800.
- Authors
Ratcliffe, John E.
- Abstract
The article examines the practices of marine diving and maritime salvage in the Atlantic Ocean from 1500 to 1800. This historical period coincided with a large increase in maritime commerce and traffic, during which ships would often sink and lose their cargo in the process. Divers during this period were often employed to salvage that cargo or harvest natural resources from the seafloor. The author examines these practices, the technology used by divers during this period, and historical accounts derived from archival literature pertinent to the topic.
