- Authors
Economakis, Richard M.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on British architect George Whitmore's design of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu, Greece. Aspects of the palace's original appearance and ordering are discussed such as the recurrence of the numeral seven to refer to the Septinsular Republic and the use of Palladian ideal proportions in its major rooms. Potential precedents for Whitmore's selection of forms beyond 18th-century sources such as Robert Adam are considered. Allegories between the building's sculptural elements and regional politics are also discussed.
