Conventions of golf Golf is a technical sport The golf industry professes that golf is a "technical" sport, as if to suggest that other sports are not, or that golf is more technical than others, both of which are untrue. Conclusion In his career quest to 'bridge the gap between the science of the golf swing and the art of golf coaching', it would seem that Jim Christine, like most golf coaches, is in a continual battle to safeguard the student from the pitfalls of the IP approach to coaching and skill acquisition. The stimulus article, "Golf swing technician Jim Christine: Bridging the gap between the science of the golf swing and the art of golf coaching", and the accompanying commentaries present some key issues in golf coaching, especially coach development, technology, coaching methods, and critical thinking. International golf coach Peter Green discusses the legendary John Jacobs, who Jim accepted an invitation from to shadow him at one of his golf schools; and John Stirling, who Jim had coaching from on his own golf game. Jim tells of his experience of going to a one-day PGA conference at which John Jacobs was the keynote speaker and at the end of the talk Mr Jacobs said, "If any assistant would like to come and watch what I do on golf schools, they would be welcome" (p. 6).
