- Abstract
The article offers information on German attacks on U.S. prior to First World War. It states that unable to directly challenge U.S. diplomatically or militarily, German agents attacked U.S. infrastructure from within. The significant attack took place on Black Tom Island on July 30, 1916. There was an explosion and it was carried out by German espionage network which was operating throughout North America. Operatives planned and financed by the German government would spread propaganda, agitate the U.S. labor movement, exploit anarchist activity. Though there were only six deaths, the panic, the damage to infrastructure and violation of domestic tranquility are the ultimate goals of saboteurs and it accelerated U.S.'s entry into the war in Europe.
