- Authors
Bilbro, Jeffrey
- Abstract
Presents literary criticism of the novels "Fathers and Sons," "Smoke" and "Virgin Soil" by Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. It discusses the influence of the writings of American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson on Turgenev. The author suggests that Emerson's views on individualism provided Turgenev with the concept of the ideal reformer in Russia during the European and Slavic reform movements of the 19th century. Also discussed are French perspectives on Emersonian philosophies.
