- Abstract
Teaching English Learners (ELs) to revise their writing is challenging and can cause frustration for both students and teachers. Although there is a renewed interest in writing with the widespread adoption of the Common Core State Standards, teachers of ELs are often left without guidance. This article provides suggestions for overcoming ELs' reluctance to revise and offers concrete strategies for how to teach revision to upper elementary students. The district writing curriculum was modified to include writing workshop elements. The strategy "ARMS vs. CUPS" was chosen to help students differentiate between the skills of revising and editing. Writing conferences gave students the language, skills, and confidence they needed to tackle revision. Revision became a valued part of the writing process as students learned to articulate their writing needs. When revision is broken down into steps and is modeled by a teacher in a supportive environment, ELs are able to make meaningful changes to their writing.
