- Abstract
As well-coordinated predators that hunt in massive numbers, I Dorylus i ants are likely able to exploit whole sea turtle nests - large, immobile, nutrient-rich food sources that are seasonally available. Within nests buried on sandy ocean-facing beaches, sea turtle eggs are subject to mortality from natural predators, including invertebrates such as ghost crabs and beetle larvae. During a routine field inspection on a nesting beach in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia, we found driver ants ( I Dorylus laevigatus i ) attacking, feeding on, and killing green sea turtle hatchlings that had recently emerged from a nest.
