- Abstract
The article discusses Priscilla Cooper Tyler, daughter-in-law of U.S. President John Tyler, who acted as the surrogate hostess and first lady at the White House in Washington, D.C. between 1841 and 1844. It comments on her role as a public figure, social functions over which she presided, and the emotional stress of the position. The author also comments on the rancorous political atmosphere of the time, noting conflict between Democrats, Whigs, and President Tyler.
