- Title
Aural Community and William Barnes as Earwitness.
- Authors
Drury, Annmarie
- Abstract
The article analyzes several poems by William Barnes including "The Wind up the Stream," "The Turnstile," and "The Two Churches." It argues that Barnes's dialect poems support the dynamism and legitimacy of an aural community challenging a Victorian concept of regional dialect. It cites the work of dialect speaker and linguistic expert Thomas Hallam to support the analysis of Barnes's poem.
