GALLIPOLI: FILM AND THE TRADITIONS OF AUSTRALIAN HISTORY.

- Abstract
The article presents information on the motion picture "Gallipoli," directed by Peter Weir. The story of the film is about a young Western Australian from the outback who meets a townbred rival in a foot race, and together they join up, go overseas, and fight in Gallipoli, Turkey. Peter Weir's direction is strongest in the first section where images of the Australian outback, the isolated farm, sport, and British traditions combine to suggest reasons for the young hero to join up as a light-hearted but committed venture. He later persuades his opponent in a West Australian athletic meeting to join him. Together they first hitch a long rail ride and then foolishly struggle on foot across a shimmering desert to join up, hopefully in the 10th Light Horse. The film also shows something of the suspicions that actually developed between Egyptians and Australians, but like the Wassa riot, tends to follow traditional accounts in underestimating the hostility between the two groups. Australian troops were involved in a disproportionately high percentage of the clashes that took place between the military and native civilians.
